About the Role
BlackFlash Magazine is offering a professional development opportunity for an emerging practitioner in the arts and culture sector through the Canada Summer Jobs program. This position provides hands-on experience in the production and circulation of a contemporary art publication, while supporting the organization’s Director/Publisher and overall operations. This is an ideal role for someone interested in arts administration, publishing, communications, and nonprofit work.
Key Responsibilities
The Arts & Publishing Assistant will work closely with the Director and contribute to the daily operations of the organization. Responsibilities include:
- Supporting circulation, marketing, and strategic planning activities
- Participating in the daily operations of the organization in collaboration with the Director
- Supporting the Director and Communications Coordinator in improving our Circulations Database, and direct mail systems
- Attending monthly meetings and supporting committee responsibilities
- Working closely with the Director on the production, distribution, and promotion of the magazine
- Working alongside the Communications Coordinator
- Communicating with subscribers
- Following the budget and timeline of a magazine production cycle
- Networking with artists, writers, curators, and arts administrators through organizational activities
- Supporting editorial and programming projects from start to finish with guidance from the Director, Editor, and Communications Coordinator
- Working with staff and the Board to support fundraising initiatives
- Collaborating with the Fundraising Committee to develop a fundraising strategy, sponsorship database, and approach potential sponsors

Qualifications
- Emerging professional or student in arts, culture, communications, or a related field
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Interest in contemporary art and publishing
- Organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple tasks
Eligibility
This position is funded through the Canada Summer Jobs program. Applicants must:
- Be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of employment
- Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person with refugee protection status
- Be legally entitled to work in Canada
