We’re Hiring: Online Editor

BlackFlash is looking to welcome an Online Editor to produce a thoughtfully curated and energetic editorial program for our online platforms.

The Online Editor will develop and execute a regular schedule of informative, commentative, and insightful web-exclusive content that parallels and expands BlackFlash’s current publishing practice; responsive articles, critically-engaged reviews, live readings, panels discussions, workshops, and artist projects that increase the visibility of Canadian contemporary art practices. The editorial content will aim to provide beneficial support to the prairie art community as well as engage and expand BlackFlash readership.

Education and Experience:

• Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree (Art History or a related field in Fine Arts, Humanities, or Social Sciences);
• Minimum of three years combined experience in art writing, editing, curating, or administration, related to contemporary art;
• Experience commissioning freelance writers and substantive edits considered an asset;
• Experience in the non-profit and/or artist-run sector considered an asset;
• Well-developed networks within the national and international art community considered an asset;
• Deep commitment to approaching all work with knowledge and understanding of, as well as care for, anti-oppression and equity practices.

Roles and Responsibilities:

The Online Editor will:

• Be responsible to the authority of the Board of Directors of Buffalo Berry Press and supervised by the Managing Editor;
• Work closely and collaboratively with the Managing Editor and Editorial Committee to develop and execute a robust web-exclusive editorial content schedule;
• Shape and commission a wide-range of creative projects that meet the editorial priorities of BlackFlash and respond to current art and cultural practices in a timely manner;
• Build upon the dialogue and editorial material that BlackFlash promotes through its core activities;
• Communicate with artists, writers, and creative professionals in all stages of their careers with compassion and professionalism;
• Thoughtfully write and edit editorial content within professional editorial standards and adhere to a tight publishing schedule;
• Develop and adhere to an approved program budget;
• Carry out general administration duties;
• Participate in the organization’s fundraising activities;
• Assist in development and funding opportunities such as the creation of sponsorship packages and grant applications;
• Ensuring BlackFlash meets the standards, strategic goals, and priorities of the organization;
• Represent BlackFlash publicly and within the professional visual arts sector.

Related Tasks:

• Follow, support, and critically engage with the prairie art ecology;
• Participate in monthly board meetings and quarterly editorial committee meetings;
• Support BlackFlash’s ongoing mission to create a sustainable and thoughtfully engaged organization.

Requirements:

• Superior writing and excellent substantive editing skills;
• Responsible, ethical, and accountable;
• Extensive knowledge and engagement with discourse in contemporary Canadian and international art, in a range of media and disciplines;
• Well-developed ability to research, gather, and evaluate information;
• Advanced project management, planning, and organizational skills;
• Self-directed with proven ability to prioritize, assign, and execute multiple tasks simultaneously and meet numerous ongoing deadlines;
• Knowledge of editorial guidelines and standards, including familiarity with copyright, image reproduction, CARFAC fee schedule, and the Chicago Manual of Style;
• Computer skills suitable for an Apple, Google Apps, and Adobe environment. 

Additional Information:

The role is a 1-year contract, based on full-time hours (35 hours per week) and will require occasional evenings and weekend commitments. 

This project is aimed to support the prairie art community. Applicants located in the prairies (Saskatchewan, Alberta, and Manitoba) or with strong ties to the prairies are encouraged to apply.

BlackFlash is a contemporary art publication that explores emergent practices and new developments in art including, but not limited to, all facets of image-based artwork, sound and audio art, performance, and social practice. Published three times per year, BlackFlash helps develop and support professional art practice while providing a space for culturally and artistically diverse voices. While BlackFlash’s program includes writers and artists from across the country, as well as abroad, we have a specific interest in supporting the work of writers and artists practicing in the prairies.

BlackFlash is published in Saskatoon by Buffalo Berry Press Inc, a registered not-for-profit corporation with charitable status.

BlackFlash was founded in 1983 by the Saskatoon artist-run centre, The Photographer’s Gallery (TPG). BlackFlash was founded to promote contemporary photography and over its thirty-five year history, the magazine evolved, following the artistic trajectory of photo-based practice to include artists working with new technologies such as video and digital media. In its commitment to being responsive to artists and relevant to contemporary art practice, the magazine has recently broadened its editorial mandate, while affirming its distinctive prairie perspective.
