BlackFlash 37.3: Winter 2021

For our winter issue, I had the great pleasure of speaking to Saskatoon-based multi-disciplinary artist Amalie Atkins about her practice. After over a decade of writing, sewing, shooting, and editing, Akins presented her trilogy The Diamond Eye Assembly to audiences at the Remai Modern in the spring of 2019. Atkins and I communicated for months, sharing our thoughts on the project and its underlying message concerning mourning, preservation, and restoration. As this issue comes to fruition, Atkins concluded our conversation by saying, “…the characters in my film are women of action. They move through their grief, and find their way.” Our capacity to move through life’s exhaustive pain and loss is examined throughout this issue. Each artist discussed manifests their own map to solace and strength during their shadow hour.
